Parc national des Calanques

, ,

If you were to visit or see pictures of the area slightly south and east of Marseille, France, which is now known as Parc national des Calanques, or Calanques National Park, you would very probably be more than a bit surprised to learn that the magnificent cliffs, mountains, trails, islands, and marine areas were granted national park status only recently: three years ago in April of 2012.

Crossover Athletes At The 2016 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials

Many of the best marathoners in the country will compete in the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials this Saturday, February 13th, but only six athletes—the top-three male and female finishers—will earn the right to represent the United States at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil this August.

The Differences Between Ultras And Stage Races

Ultramarathons and stage races with sub-ultramarathon stages—think stages races like the 6-day TransRockies Run, which covers 120 miles—each have their own unique challenges.

Running Destinations in European Cities

Europe is a popular travel destination for many reasons: its rich history attracts historians; its grand cities marvel visitors with eclectic architecture and centuries-old facades; the diversity among its different countries and cities make Europe favorable to nearly everyone; its skiing, hiking and running trails, and breathtakingly beautiful mountains and landscapes, attract adventurers and outdoors persons from around the globe.

Speed, Gender, And Age: An Ultrarunning Comparison

The sport of ultrarunning is growing. There were roughly 80,000 ultrarunning finishes around the country in 2014, which marked a 15% increase in finishes as compared to 2013.

Hiking To Machu Picchu: A Half Step Into The Past

The Incan Empire consisted of hundreds of thousands of square miles of land; its population blossomed, on some estimates, to as many as 37 million people; its system of trails and roads are believed to be as extensive as 40,000 kilometers in length; and its agricultural, architectural, and engineering techniques and methods would be considered beyond impressive even today.

Steadily Better: Tim Tollefson, Interviewed

Ultrarunning is in the midst of a paradigm shift, as blazing-fast road runners take to longer distances on the trails, and Tim Tollefson, a 2:18 marathoner and 2012 Olympic Marathon Trials qualifier, is part of it.

The Gamer: A Profile Of Andy Wacker

Andy Wacker stands a little more than six feet tall but he seems quite a lot taller because of his slender frame and narrow build. If you were to meet him at a bar, you might even mistake him as frail because of the way his shirt drapes over his lean and skinny features. And when you first meet him, he might seem somewhat timid, cautiously reserved, and perhaps even a little uncertain of himself.
